Garden of Garbage
Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, was the world's largest garbage dump. Ironically, Jardim means Garden. The site officially closed in 2012, but clandestine operations still go on. Many families live in the middle of mountains of junk, like 40 years old Mara, with 12 children and 7 grandchildren, fighting between the contradiction of pests, diseases, odors, bugs – which generates waste – and the necessity of life, because working with the trash becomes their only means of subsistence.
